Gear oil use
09 Jun,2025
Gear oil is a lubricant specially used for lubricating gear transmission devices. Its main function is to reduce friction and wear between gears, extend the life of equipment, and assist in heat dissipation, rust prevention and shock load buffering. Its performance characteristics (such as high viscosity and strong extreme pressure and wear resistance) make it suitable for various gear transmission systems, especially under high load, high speed or harsh working conditions. The following are the core uses, classifications and usage points of gear oil:
1. Lubricate and reduce wear, reduce gear wear
Working principle: When the gears are meshing, the contact pressure on the tooth surface is extremely high (up to several thousand megapascals). The gear oil forms an extreme pressure anti-wear film (containing extreme pressure additives such as sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine) on the tooth surface to prevent scratches, pitting or bonding caused by direct contact between metals.
Scenario application:
Automobile manual transmission, drive axle gears (such as differentials, main reducers).
Industrial gearboxes (such as metallurgical rolling mill gears, mining crusher gears, wind power gearboxes).
Engineering machinery (gearboxes and final drive gears of excavators and loaders).
2. Heat dissipation and cooling, control operating temperature
When the gears run at high speed, frictional heat is generated significantly. The gear oil transfers the heat to the oil tank or cooler through circulation to avoid oil temperature overheating and lubrication failure.
Case: The oil temperature of the wind power gearbox needs to be controlled within 80-100℃. The heat dissipation capacity of the gear oil directly affects the reliability of the unit.
3. Buffering shock and protecting the transmission system
When the vehicle starts, shifts gears or the load of the construction machinery changes suddenly, instantaneous impact loads will be generated between the gears. The high viscosity and oil film toughness of the gear oil can absorb the impact energy and reduce the risk of gear breakage (especially suitable for heavy-duty trucks and mining machinery).
4. Anti-rust and anti-corrosion, extend the life of the equipment
The rust inhibitor and antioxidant in the gear oil can prevent moisture and acidic substances from contacting the metal, prevent tooth surface rust and oil oxidation and deterioration (suitable for humid environments or long-term parking equipment).
